How Zero Emissions - All Electric City is made, Oslo.
Many of us are unaware about the city of Oslo, the capital of Norway. This Scandinavian country's capital city is perhaps the underdog for most of the world's population, when it comes to climate policy. Although the country's major revenue comes from crude oil extraction from its oil rich shores, its acknowledgement to the adverse effects from the climate crisis is commendable.
It is also no secret that the country lies in the coldest regions of the planet, and any minute change in the climate can make its situation worse, while for the rest world could mean trivial. Implementing all necessary policies in this regard is not just for it's leadership in the adoption of the Paris Agreement, but also for its own good.
The country promoted electrification & other zero-emissions agenda way ahead from the rest of the world, with various incentives for the adoption by the masses and even going as far as penalising those who are either reluctant or in denial of their approach. Because of the government's implementation of these policies, promoted a massive drive towards electrification both by the businesses & community.
It was not just the transportation industry that are under the umbrella of adoption, but even the construction industry that are added to their policy. Collectively, both these sectors were accounted for as much as 2/3rd of the urban pollution as assessed as the contributors for the GHG emissions.
Norway has an ambitious target of 2030 for 100% reduction of GHG emissions compared to their 2009 levels, and the adoption clearly shows that it is already way ahead of its expected timeline. To achieve this, it was not just the road going vehicles that were electrified, but even the vast number of ferries that operate in the fjords of the region that are now fully electric. It also happens to be the world's first electric ferries to operate in their country.
The country also has vast number of dams for hydro-electricity & off-shore wind electricity generators, making their goals on cleaner energy reliance without any large tradeoffs. Although their GDP is majorly based on selling fossil fuels, their domestic consumption largely operates on cleaner energy.
