Major Bridge Collapses in Baltimore as Shipping Vessel Dali Crashes due to a Blackout

A large container ship named 'Dali' crashed on to the 'Francis Scott Key Bridge' near Baltimore port and collapsed in seconds. On early Tuesday morning after a container ship collided with it taking down the whole steel truss bridge in the matter of few seconds. The ship is said to have lost power, making it uncontrollable to the crew driving it.

The bridge was immediately closed to the traffic by the police when the crew from the ship sent out a mayday call to the port authorities within minutes when they realized the potential danger. However, the ship crashed on to one of the two main pillars of the bridge, when the ship drifted out of control as the crew couldn't control the powerless ship.

Update 1: The incident occurred around 1:30 am on Tuesday, and there were at least seven road potholes repairmen onboard the bridge who also fell into the near-to-freezing waters, two were rescued, two bodies were recovered and rest presumably dead.

Update 2: NTSB, the investigative authority have recovered the voyage data recorder (VDR, i.e., the Black-box) to analyze the cause and also the crew have been interviewed to understand the accident which took the 47 year old bridge crashing down completely.

Update 3: The un-steerable ship is said to have come to a complete halt, which was sailing at a speed of 8 knots right before it crashed into the bridge. It transferred all of it's kinetic energy on to the bridge's post, sending a devastating blow for that concrete & steel structure that went crashing down.

The crew onboard the ill-fated Dali were said to be mostly Indian nationals, who were commended by American President Joe Biden for their attentiveness and sense of making decisions at the call of time.

The impact of this accident has been considered severe, as the maritime operations of Baltimore port is completely dependent on this very narrow access-way and reportedly more than 40 ships being stranded at the port, bringing a complete halt on its regular operations.
