Citing law, National Green Tribunal (NGT) rejected the plea for extending of 3 Specially Armoured Vehicles that are used in the convoy of Prime Minister of India. These 3 armoured vehicles were brought about a decade ago, in 2013 from Renault to serve the Special Protection Group (SPG)'s troops for rapid intervention and transport needs to protect Prime Minister's security.
These tactical behemoths run on diesel fuel and are rarely used, which have clocked only 6,000 km, 9,500 km and 15,000 km respectively ever since they were inducted in these 10 year old ownership. Citing their low mileage and upright maintenance, SPG wrote to the NGT to extend their usability status by extending their registration valid for another 5 years.
In a reply to the plea, in its order dated March 22, the NGT principal bench of chairperson Justice Prakash Shrivastava and expert member Dr A Senthil Vel, which rejected the SPG application, cited the Supreme Court’s order on October 2018 to ban diesel vehicles older than 10 years from plying on the roads of Delhi NCR.
So far the netizens have reacted on either sides citing the condition of the vehicles, costs involved and being a low mileage as to why they should or shouldn't still be honoured to continue to serve its duty.
