In the last general elections for Karnataka government, Congress party had announced a few schemes in their manifesto. Free electricity up to 200 units a month per home was one of it.

The newly formed Government of Karnataka has started to process applicants for the 'free electricity up to 200 units for household', if they meet the following requirements.

  1. Applicant should submit last 12 months of electricity bill, along with their Aadhaar
    1. Only those who had a consumption less than 200 units for the last annual average (July 2022 to June 2023) will be considered for the scheme
    2. Annual average will be considered for billing with a buffer of 10%. Ex. if consumer's annual average usage was 150 units (including the buffer), then any additional units consumed will be billed at Rs.7 per unit.
  2. Only one (electricity meter) RR number per applicant will be considered.
    • If the applicant has multiple RR numbers, like of a landlord, only one will be honoured.
  3. Tenants can also opt for the scheme, if only
    • They should provide their Aadhaar & bill (again, only one RR can be claimed)
  4. Every beneficiary will be allotted a unique account id, linked to their Aadhaar.
  5. Beneficiary new scheme billing will begin from July month onward.
  6. Applicant have to register for the scheme on the Seva Sindhu portal.
  7. If the last 12 months recorded annual average was below 200 units and if now exceeds 200 units, then the consumer will have to pay the entire bill amount, no scheme deductions will apply then.
  8. Existing schemes like Bhagya Jyothi/Kuteera Jyothi and Amrutha Jyothi will be subsumed under the Gruha Jyothi scheme.

The government will bear the expenses incurred by the Escoms (electricity supply companies), including the Fuel and Power Purchase Cost Adjustment.
