In a fire breakout at an electric bike showroom in Peravallur area of Chennai, 21 electric bikes were destroyed on Tuesday night. The fire and rescue department personnel confirmed of no casualties, suspected the fire could have been a result of a short circuit in one of the bike batteries that were put on charge.
Local police said the e-bike showroom owned and operated by Prakash of Wall Tax Road, also functioned as a service center. The fire and rescue department personnel said that the fire started from the service station part of the showroom and spread to other parts.
When the fire spreaded to other parts of the showroom, a total of 21 e-bikes worth around 21 lakhs were reduced to bad scrap. Fire fighting vehicles reached the spot and doused the fire, from nearby fire stations of Kolathur, Vyasarpadi and Sembium.
Fire department personnel told the e-bike showroom owners and service stations to follow the industry guidelines to not leave the lithium based batteries to be charged unsupervised for fire safety reasons.
