Indian Moonlander Spacecraft Chandrayaan communicates to MOX, ISTRAC, ISRO of its successful entry into the lunar orbit

ISRO confirmed the successful insertion of Chandrayaan-3, into the lunar orbit on Saturday

The required manoeuvre was done from an ISRO facility in Bengaluru. “Chandrayaan-3 has been successfully inserted into the lunar orbit. A retro-burning at the Perilune was commanded from the Mission Operations Complex (MOX), ISTRAC (ISRO Telemetry, Tracking and Command Network), Bengaluru,”

the Indian Space agency said in a tweet.

"Perilune is the spacecraft’s closest point to the moon. The next operation — reduction of orbit — will be done at 11 PM on Sunday"

Landing on Moon is expected on August 23, where Chandrayaan-3’s lander, Vikram, and rover, Pragyaan, if everything goes well will make a soft-landing near the lunar south pole at 70 degrees latitude to become the world’s first mission by humans.

The orbiting trajectory will do 4 elliptical orbits (subsiding towards a circular with each orbit), to a final 100×100 km circular one. Thereafter, the lander, housing the rover inside will separate from the propulsion module and start its powered descent towards the moon’s surface.

Post touchdown, the Lander and Rover will have a mission life of one Lunar day, which is equal to 14 earth days, and the same goes for each Lunar night. Moon takes around one month (close to 28 earth days) for it to complete one rotation on its axis (and one revolution around the earth). The rover and lander will be landing right at dawn, as they cannot survive the extreme drop in temperatures during lunar nights.
