Indian Olympic Association risks ban from IOC, Corruption in Sports

In an official statement issued by the International Olympic Committee (IOC), Indian Olympic Association (IOA) is risking a ban from IOC if not resolved by December. As IOA has not resolved the governance & elections disputes since December 2021, the IOC has issued the official statement of warning about a possible ban. 

If implemented, the ban would prevent Indian athletes competing in any Olympics and also block any funding from IOC. The ban could have serious impact on the India's global sporting stage. The IOC executive board also decided to postpone its session in Mumbai to September or October of 2023, from the original schedule in May 2023.

The IOA elections are due since December 2021, as its been held up in a court case. The case seeks to change its constitution in line with rules stipulated by the national sporting code. IOA was previously banned in 2012, this came after elections saw corruption-tainted official was voted in as Secretary General for IOA back then.

India only returned to Olympic two years later in 2014 Sochi Winter Games, after voting in a new set of officials. The IOC has also warned the Guatemalan Olympic  Committee of a ban next year. If domestic legal dispute is not resolved by India, Paris will hold the next Olympics next summer in 2024, stated IOC.
