Goodwood Festival of Speed

2012 Goodwood Festival of Speed kick started on 28th June and will be on till the weekend, 01 July. It is also lovingly abbreviated as 'FoS' or just 'Festival of  Speed' and has always pulled a great crowd, who like to have a fair taste of the world of all the Motorsports stuff in one arena. How nice the idea isn't it!?

This great event was first held and founded in the year 1993 by the 'Earl of March', who wanted to bring the motor racing back in Goodwood estate. The best part of this event is that since 1997, a monument for car manufacturers is erected in front of the Goodwood Castle for the event, even though it is temporarily for the event only. It started as 1997 was the 50th anniversary for Ferrari, the next year was for Porsche and Lord March wanted to honour them! All these nothing less spectacular monuments are designed by Gerry Judah! It is nothing short of collection of masterpieces, but only a sight to see for a short period.

So that's being the brief on the event's history, here is some of the best set of video documentary from last year!

A Quick Look

For those who only need a piece of action and nothing on the explanation, here is a quick video ;)

Rally New Zealand - Day 2 & 3 - Citroen still tops!

After a thrilling battle for the top three fight on day 2 continued with enthusiasm and strategies.. Citroen WRT's ace and 8-time World Champ, Sebastien Loeb still holding the top position and doesn't seem to loose it easily.

Loeb's team-mate Mikko is having a tough enough for him in this rally in particular, which suits the Finn's style of driving!

2nd Day 's Highlights here below!

WRC Rally New Zealand - Citroen Leads!

Latvala might have been quick, but it was Loeb who claimed the top honors at the end of Day 1. In an action drama unfolding all throughout the day, all the top 10 drivers faced challenges not just with the competitors, but also with the weather that staged to play with them!

At the beginning of the day, Latvala took the first stage victory by a very little margin only to loose at the next stage. It looked like the tire choices played a vital role in commanding the top spots, as we have witnessed in the past. Haven't we!?.

Citroens were fielding with soft compound tires, which favored them with the wet and damp stages. But for Ford it is difficult to understand why Petter Solberg always chooses the wrong tire choices on almost every round of this championship, however the question is, is it his decision or the team's!

Latvala was also sporting hard compounds, if not less he also crashed in SS7 after cutting too much into a corner and going off the road into a fence post and getting his car's wheel entangled in the fencing wire.. I mean how dramatic can it get to this finn, ever! Always!? Or is it the issue with the ever consistent Loeb and ex-Ford's and new Loeb's team-mate Mikko Hirvonen. The duo managed 1-2 position at the end of the day and hopes to retain it till the finish.

Well as the golden line with the WRC drivers, "YOU NEVER KNOW"!!!

The First Indian MotoGP Racer who finished on Podium!

The MotoGP has seen many legends racing on its circuits from quite a long time, but it took way too many decades to take an Indian on its circuits. So celebrating a first International event Indian winner Sarath Kumar, was supposed to be quite nostalgic! However, it is not quite that way back in his homeland!

Also almost anyone reading this name must be wondering who this young heart might be! It is not very surprising to have such reactions as the matters with motorsports back here in India rarely makes it to the headlines, despite many roaring success in India and beyond!

Give it a try and go with this little video to know more about this racing lad from India!

Sarath Kumar made history by being the first Indian ever to secure a podium in an international motorcycle racing championship. His third place at Monza, Italy, in April this year is today overshadowed by certain realities that could stand in the way of a bright future.

Today, Sarath juggles the work of a taxi driver and that of a professional motorsports racer. His will is strong and the challenges ahead tough. The Indian motorsports eco-system was perhaps not yet ready for his success.

In this touching webisode, Sarath talks candidly about his life and dreams. We believe this history-making youngster has slightly changed the course of our nation's sporting future.

Whatever it is, Sarath Kumar has an iconic status in Indian motorsports fraternity.

Let god bless on these young souls who want to make it big, for themselves and their country!

We wish him the best for his racing future and his personal life too! Go get more trophies for all of us Sarath :)

WRC 2012 : Round 7, Brother Rally New Zealand

Over-ruling the chaos in FIA & WRC Events, the round 7 of 2012 season kicks off in just 2 days from this moment. Rally New Zealand with chief promoter Brother makes it, an one of the scenic stages along the sea-lined and rich green curvy mountain gravel roads. The roads are very similar to Finland, minus the treacherous landscapes found in here. Almost all drivers love these roads, experienced or not, is what makes it a must have on the calendar.

Joy is doubled when one can find exceptionally enthusiastic local and international fans alongside the stages/roads to find their heroes charging past those flowing curvy gravel surfaced country roads and small stretches on tarmac sections too. It is one of a kind to watch, for sure!

This years rally has about 14 WRC cars fighting for the top spot, five in S2000 [SWRC] class, and 18 production class, out of which 9 competing for points in PWRC, the rest of the field with 2WD cars for a grand total of 42 cars lined-up in the start line. Well, thats a treat for the eyes and ears.. isn't it! The highlights of this rally is the return of Dani Sordo in Prodrive's Mini WRC, Louise Cook's entry in production car [sans points scoring], Colin's younger brother along with P.G.Anderson in the factory team Proton Satrio Neo S2000 cars.

This rally was first induced into the WRC in 1977, and ever since, it was cherised both by drivers and its fans. The previous winner Jari.M.Latvala is the one to beat here and every one among the top 5 in the drivers list are anticipated to make it to the top, also not forgetting Dani Sordo, who is equally capable. VW Motorsports will be absent from this round, as they seem little too busy in developing the much awaited Polo R WRC in the coming season. Well it is quite a task in developing a WRC car ain't it!?

For more news about this rally can be found at our LIVE-Channel, exclusive and instantly updated report at WRC-Channel's page.

Gareth Roberts - A Tribute

In an unfortunate incident that shook the IRC community and motorsports world early yesterday, has left us short of one more rising star! Gareth Roberts, who parted us at a very chirping and young at just over 24 departed the rallying scene forever while doing his beloved part of his life.. co-driving (navigating) in the 5th round of IRC Targo Florio Rally's special stage 8.

Gareth was co-driving for Craig Breen since 2009 since they paired up for rallies to come after. The pair won the inaugural FIA Academy in the WRC, in the previous season - 2011.

Gareth Roberts, from Wales, GB, was trained as an electrician for living and was very much involved in motorsports from a very young age and did is successfully to claim the FIA Academy championship too. We recall Craig Breen had once saying, "Gareth is a magician, he’s incredible how he gets every note out so quickly. I couldn’t do it without him."

Let the almighty give enough strength for his family, friends, and fans alike, to bear the loss of the soul lost.

Rest in peace, Gareth Roberts! We will miss you!!

WRC 2013 - FIA Confirms and Announces 13 Events

After the long dreaded week of the future of WRC after the WMSC meeting, it was a little relief that there will be 2013 and may be more... uh! It will be more!! :)

But this good news has a yellow flag, FIA is yet to announce the name of Promoter though! Until Finland, it is FIA's & event organiser's baby to change the nappies and whatever.. This means, the fans are not sure what will be the hit at their wallet management & what they would be getting in return!

The list of events for 2013 is as below, in alphabetical order,

  • Argentina
  • Australia
  • Finland
  • France
  • Germany
  • Great Britain
  • Greece
  • Italy
  • Mexico
  • Monte Carlo
  • Portugal
  • Spain
  • Sweden

All the geo-locations remains same, but just a little bit of change of Australian round replacing the current New Zealand. Post the meeting, the 'million euro' question remains the same! What happened to the 100,000 fee thingy, that created all the pre-meet ruckus? Did that issue resolved, with any conclusion? And was this events confirmed after the acceptance of the local event organiser!?. Uh! Too many questions and little answers or info... hope these questions are answered positively in the upcoming days!

Also in terms of cost-cutting measures for the upcoming season, only number of tires made used per car is reduced. Q.Any other ways of cutting the costs involved?!.. maybe like Hybrid-WRC Cars in future to save on the fuel, although to develop it would be another huge expenditure!

Atleast there is a relief that we get to see this baby monster from VW Motorsports!

Loeb gets his X Games DS3 XL ready

For people who were cursing me to publish a complete french speaking Loeb in the earlier news post [live], here is something you would like to know.. Loeb is going to get an all new breed of DS3 WRC for one shot Global RallyCross event during WRC mid-season break in Los Angeles, USA.

Loeb says that he actually was impressed by the video invitation from Travis Pastrana and was excited by the idea. With this invitation formalised with the team principal Yves Matton, Citroen Racing Director, the challenge was accepted.

With the formal confirmation from Citroen Racing, Sebastien Loeb will be present on the X-Games in Los Angeles! June 28 to July 1. However the challenge is not going to be small to the World Rally champion as he would be confronting the existing experienced squad of stars of its discipline. Pastrana in mind - but also some Marcus Gronholm. This will be a new experience for Loeb saying, "I love competing and I'm always curious about new disciplines," he confirms. "A week after the arrival of Rally New Zealand, so I will be in Los Angeles to meet the challenge for me was started by Travis! The rallycross as we have in Europe is very dramatic and declination U.S. seems even more extreme. The prospect of driving a Citroen DS3 545ch door against door with opponents of the caliber of Marcus Gronholm can only motivate me! "

Beware, if Loeb is new at this, it is not a man to cross the ocean to play second fiddle! "Once the project is actually launched, we have prepared with the utmost seriousness," said Yves Matton, Citroen Racing Director. "Since this is a one shot, we will not need to think about managing a championship position. There is only one race and we're determined to try to win. It will not be easy because we have everything to discover facing opponents well established in this type of competition, but we will fight from first to last meter! " To confront the specialists Global Rallycross overseas, the World Rally champion will take the wheel of a Citroen DS3 XL (like X-Games and Loeb!), Evolution of the DS3 designed specifically for the event, he was able to test in Dreux. "With four-wheel drive and power, the DS3 pushing very hard! We took advantage of these trials to test different settings, "he says. "But we know that the American circuits are very different and therefore we must quickly adapt the car to the conditions. " "From a distance, the DS3 rallycross resembles the WRC," said Cyrille Jourdan, project engineer in charge of Citroën Racing. "If the design of the chassis and running gear is quite similar, the mechanics are fundamentally different. The two-liter turbo engine of the DS3 XL swells whopping 545ps of power and develops 800 Nm of torque, reminding us the GroupB era. Acceleration is worthy of an F1, with 0 to 100 km / h shot in 2'' 4! " "The radiator is moved to the trunk," says Cyril Jourdan, this DS3 rallycross being devoid of spare wheels ... and copilot. "The main visual difference between the WRC and the XL is also the addition of ventilation slots in the rear fenders.

This optimization aims to achieve the best performance at the start, the most crucial phase in rallycross. " One of five rounds of the Global Rallycross Championship (GRC), the X-Games in Los Angeles will be played at the Gilbert Lindsay Plaza, a circuit which includes occasional bitumen and loose soil, while providing a jump of 20m suitable for powering the show.

No WRC - New Zealand for VW Motorsports

VW Motorsports have choosed out of New Zealand Rally for developmental tests, team manager Sven Smeets confirms. He says, "We were testing in Greece last week and in the next few weeks we have planned for tests in Finland and Germany".

As the mid-season break is after the Rally New Zealand, and the next six rounds will be starting from August, Sven says, "It is going to help us in testing & developing the Polo R WRC better, as in the next six rounds after round 7 WRC is packed in just under 4 months, and they would only have 2 months left to do the finalisation on the homologation of the Polo R WRC car for next season". He also adds, "The overseas events like Mexico and Argentina has helped them to assess the logistical perspective of such events, so skipping New Zealand Rally should not affect their full season attack next year onwards".

Its actually nice to hear such positive plans from the German car maker in their firm stance of their competition regardless of the chaos in the WRC event organisers & FIA for the upcoming season 2013. Hope their optimistic point of view is adopted by the whole WRC fraternity.. fingers crossed!

He broke and set new four records, in one kilometer from stand still to flying finish, one kilometer from flying start to flying finish, then one mile from stand still to flying finish, and one mile from flying start to flying finish.

A very happy man Latvala added that 'this is quite a punchy car for just a liter engine', driving the Ford Focus Ecosport.

WRC 2013 - Events failed to signup within deadline

In line to the concerned raised by the Events Organisers across the planet for the WRC events, issue does not seem to end. In view of the deadline (8th June 2012) set for them to 'payup or get-lost' attitude of FIA's WRC Committee for the next season's registration goes down the drain, as none of the events involved in the 2013 World Rally Championship have signed the FIA's proposed agreement for next year's series.

The FIA had issued a contract agreement on 28th May 2012 which was expected to be returned by the event holders within the set deadline. The new contract form had also notified that any failure to do so would result in the event being excluded from the 2013 WRC calendar. The rally event organisers who were expected to be involved had strongly opposed the additional £100,000 fee for the media coverage, safety & timing systems. FIA had also notified 15th June for a council meeting, but the payup was supposed to be made before, and organisers had disputed on this stance quoting, that it was not very nice to be asked to payup before giving substantial details on the additional charges will be good for the event organisers part too.

So this has made us [the fans] to wonder the future of WRC as a sport... hope it all ends on a positive note post the scheduled meeting just before this week's conclusion.

Kubica recovering from Corrective Elbow Surgery

Post surgery last month, Robert Kubica is recovering of his right elbow. This one was a corrective surgery and is aimed at allowing the former Grand Prix winner to use his left hand to freely move the steering wheel. He has been in rehabilitation since the high speed crash during the Ronde di Andora rally in February 2011, where he was lucky enough to survive, though with a wide range of serious injuries.

His unfortunate crash's, after-math video.

A video reconstruction of the crash!

It was Dr. Ruggero Testoni, Head of Hand Surgery at the Pederzoli Hospital near Verona, who was in charge of carrying out the operation on the 27-year-old. He said "Thanks to this, the driver will be able to completely turn steering wheels,". "Earlier, he couldn't turn his hand when he was holding a steering wheel. He had to release it while turning left."

During five years of F1 with the then named BMW Sauber and Lotus Renault teams, Kubica had notched up one pole position, one victory and 11 podium finishes. It is still unclear as to whether the Kraków-born driver will be able to make a racing return, post recovery.

The injuries are a night mare for any sports person, aren't they.

Mahindra now all set re-bookings of the XUV5OO for India, from coming 8th June!

Mahindra is all prepared to open all-India bookings for the XUV500 by Friday, 8th June 2012. For the first commercial sales, the XUV500 was available only in 19 cities across India and now, is set for all India availability. From the initial sales and many fans generated from the recent two wins in the gruelling raid type of Rally events, the bookings of the XUV500 is anticipated for a blistering sales pitch.

The demand for this special and unique vehicle has left with atleast nine months of production capacity have been sold out. Phew! Now that looks like it is going to set some kind of new record. With such record creating sales demand has left with the Mahindra to increase the production capacity of the XUV5OO with nothing less than 4,000 units per month.

And the demand that looks like a never-ending for the XUV5OO could just cross two folds post 8th June booking openings.

The all excited, Pravin Shah, Chief Executive, Automotive Division, Mahindra & Mahindra says "It has been an incredible journey so far for the XUV500 and we are pleased to take the product national. We have been inundated with requests for re-opening of bookings not just from existing cities but also from cities where the XUV5OO was not available."

He didn't forget to add that the company has already ramped-up its production capacity with quite a unprecedented scale and they are confident that they will be able to tackle the ever-growing all-India demand for the new XUV5OO. The XUV5OO has also received more bookings than some of the under Rs. 10 lakh sedans, which better explains its VFM approach. During the second phase of bookings (XUV5OO lucky draw), Mahindra & Mahindra crossed more than 25,000 applications in the initial 10 days of bookings that took place, between 25th Jan and 3rd Feb 2012. From of the first 25,000 applications, about 7,200 were picked through lucky draw of which, the results were announced on February 15th and deliveries followed it.

The all athletic and brash front grille looks of the XUV5OO is definitely a head turner when on roads, well I never forget to give it atleast a second look when ogling is not possible. The heart of the XUV5OO, 2.2-litre VGT Turbo-charged Intercooled Common Rail Diesel engine that churns 140 bhp (max), with 330 Nm (max) of gut wrenching torque  mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox defines a must have authority. The XUV5OO is ARAI-certified with an average of 15.1 kmpl.

If the above showcased that really makes an enthusiast drool, here is the list of must-have's of the uber-luxury and safety demanding individual's features such as six airbags, electronic stability program (ESP), cruise control, hill-hold control and hill-descent control, GPS navigation with touch screen infotainment system all integrated to CD player with USB, Bluetooth Connectivity for handsfree driving while on the phone call, with Steering Audio Controls and a even the voice command for stereo. It even features static bending lights (which aids in negotiating fast and tight corners), tyretronics to inform you of a misfortune of a puncture, chiller box for chilled beer... err cool-drinks, the rain-sensing wipers, light-sensing automatic headlamps and follow-me home headlamps and finally, to the european standards of LED Daylight Running Lamp (a first for an Indian make), .

All this package is now delivered for the XUV5OO which is offered in three variants, W6, W8 and W8 AWD (4×4) for a mouth-watering pricing and aggressively priced, in the range of Rs. 11.58 lakh – Rs. 14.11 lakh.

Now tell me who doesn't want to own this, whic is capable of this!
